Man killed in Cottesloe shark
attackA MAN was killed and another injured in a shark attack early
today in shallow waters off Cottesloe.Scores of witnesses watched as the shark attacked at
6.30am at Cottesloe Beach, which was crowded with early
morning swimmers. One man aged 49 was carried to shore on a surf ski but died
at the scene.A second man who is believed to have tried to pull his friend
away from the shark was taken to hospital with cuts to his
lower leg. He was in shock but not seriously hurt.“His injuries were probably caused by the thrashing around of
the shark,” said ambulance spokesman Gary Cooper.Police immediately evacuated the beach as police and
fisheries officials mounted an air and sea search for the
shark. The attack took place in front of the Blue Duck Cafe. Owner
Kim Gamble said the shark had bitten off a man’s leg.“From the balcony I could see this huge shark – it was really
huge,” he said. “There was a whole sea of blood and it was
pulling the person.”A man paddled out on a surf ski to help the injured man, who
had been swimming with a group of middle-aged friends.“The ski went out to him and they pulled him in on to it,” said
Mr Gamble.“The shark had moved off to the south by that stage.”
Witnesses said the attack took place about 10 metres
offshore.“It would have been at least three or four metres long,” local
resident Luke Chapman said of the shark.[…]
It is believed to be the first fatal shark attack in Western
Australian for more than 30 years. However it was the second shark attack at Cottesloe in just
three years. In October 1997 two men escaped injury when a five-metre
shark – believed to be a white pointer – bit their surf-ski in half
200 metres off Cottesloe.Early last month Perth beachgoers were warned to take care
after two sharks – one believed to be a white pointer – were
spotted off the city’s northern beaches.Perth sea rescue authorities said today there had recently
been more sightings than usual of white pointer sharks off the
coast.
