c99 or c111 for slalom racing?
    1/25/2001 3:22:16 PM
How would the c99 and c111 perform in a slalom race at an amateur level in choppy conditions? I know they are not designed for racing, but I want to know what is the sacrifice I am making in terms of top end speed. For sure I’ll have more control.

Would it be siucidal to enter a race with those shapes at an amateur level? I know some good racers used RRD free ride models in slalom in Europe in 2000.

Sould I order a slalom shape, or can be fast enough on the carves? which shape is more slalom-oriented, the c99 or c111?

    Thanks!

    Hi Ale,

Both the C99 and C111 have excellent speed, in fact more than is expected for such a “handling” oriented freeride board…One of the main secrets is that the C99/111 can be ridden so HARD…the ability to just keep blasting on them makes up for the minor technical difference/s in speed between the Carve range and true dedicated slalom boardslike the Sonics….riden well,( and that is pretty easy) with plenty of power, the C99/C111 can be very competitive against dedictated slalom boards….the rougher / choppier the conditions, the more the speed difference will reduce, with the “bulletproof” ride of the Carve becoming a real advantage…Certainly it’s NOT suicidal to enter amateur races with…in fact, you may end up causing a few suprises !!

Your choice of Carve vs Sonic is ultimately up to you, weigh up the
advantages in both styles , compare with what your “average” sailing will be..with Sonic you will have fast.proven dedicated Slalom board,
with C99/C111 you will have a very fast, super handling freeride stealth racer…
( I use C99 and Sonic55 constantly, especially in chop, they can be very close !)

Both the C99 and C111 share the same basic shape/profile..both offer a similar level of “slalom orientation”…the choice of one over the other would be decided by rider weight and skill/wind speed(s)/sail sizes to be used…please let us know if you would like more recommendation/s in this area…..Cheers,

Ian or any other racers…….I use my carve 99 for slalom racing, but i am still using freeride sails. What would you recommend as a competitive racing quiver for the carve99.

Hi Brett !! Happy Australia Day !! 🙂

As a “racer”,C99 is at it’s best in powered 5.5m to 6.5m racesail/freeride conditions…Interestingly enough, good freeride sails (well tuned etc..) seem to be just about as good speed wise on the C99 as true “Race” sails…any loss in theoretical speed with the freeride sails seems to be largely made up by the increased handling ease, both in a straight line and around the corners…(the more choppy and B+J it gets, the more this prevails..) having tried and tested both, my quiver (90kg/1m88) for drag racing or slalom with C99 is race sails in the 5.5m-6.0 range, then freeride in 6.5m(7.0max!) …going bigger than 6.5 on C99 doesn’t seem all that productive…and be prepared to change/tune your fins, too !

Personally my choice is 5.7m KRX (KA/Race) 26/28 cm CurtisSR3/5s,
then 6.5m Kontrol (KA Freeride) (or KRX6.6m) with 30-32 cm Freeride…Tectonics 34 in really light straight line race conditions..
With good tuning, those sails/fins can cover nicely the useful race range of the C99…of course, you can stretch it a bit on either end….

Not sure of the conditions/wind range you are looking to cover, but hope that helps a bit…let us know if more info required…Cheers !!

    Hi Guys,
Interesting debate, as I own a Carve 111 and sail a 6.6 & 7.6 Tushingham Max on it, Ive often wondered how useful it would be at Amateur Slalom work,as it gybes so nicely and has a fair amount speed. Ive often embarrassed a few sailors onthr sailors on more Slalom orintated Boards. I use a 32 and 36 standard issue fin, but I may try a more Slalom orintated fins in the future. Does 7.6 seem big to you? I certainly would’nt go any bigger on it!! I weigh 85kgs
