    Tjena.

BIC TECHNO 283 Tested Boards July 1999
The Techno is an innovative widestyle. The designer really went for it with many of the main parametres – it has the most vee, the most rocker throughout, has the widest tail and is one of the widest overall – and is one of the shortest! In thier advertising BIC have marketed the board as planing ‘earlier than any other board’ – but the measurements indicate a rather more all-round aspect to its performance…
The board comes with an excellent Select 46cm fin. However, the fin is attached by an allen key. Bic boards used to have a bolt with a screw driver slot in the head, so you could change fin with either a socket spanner or a screwdriver. Where as a small allen key (it has to be exactly the right size to work) is a rather less common tool and is very easily lost..
On The Water: It’s a very uncomplicated, easy to sail design. Our intermediate tester found it the easiest to get going in a straight line and stay in control on. It offers a more balanced, stable ride than any of the other widestyles and despite being the widest on test doesn’t seem to overpower any earlier. It footstreers very well and is very positive in the gybe considering it’s width. It gets going more or less as early as any of the others and feels almost as fast and exciting, and although it isn’t actually among the quickest is certainly the easiest. It doesn’t suffer from the same railing off the fin that the others can, and has less need of a high lift fin to complement its style of performance (due in no little part to possessing so much Vee), so is very comfortable with smaller fins, right down to 38-39cm.
This board will greatly ease the introduction into planing windsurfing, compared with anything gone before. There is no reason why light-medium weight sailors who can sail the RYA level one triangle on a long board shouldn’t get straight on to one and crack at planing in a force 4; such is the stability of the platform. We were very impressed with its overall versatility as it really does perform well in winds from a Force 3 up to Force 5. It is not a high wind board per se, but it handles a blow and rough conditions surprisingly well and intermediates should be quite happy on it with sails down to 5.0m in relatively sheltered waters. When they are ready to progress to high winds or coastal waters it can remain in the quiver as a very crediable early planing board for use with rigs of up to 8.5m and beyond!
We must stress that it is a big board, and lighter sailors will find it less exciting and responsive than convertional Freeride 295s, so it is perhaps less relevant to more competent sailors, unless they are looking specifically for easy 8.0m+ sailing – or to try some racing. Bic have announced the formation of a one-design race fleet for the Techno, and its an absolutely ideal board for this purpose – it sails upwind really easily on its vee, is very controllable in a wide range of conditions, and not too technically demanding.
Overall: An excellent, very voluminous and extremely easy board to sail. For the less experienced sailor it’s an ideal tool for getting to grips with the planing windsurfing. For the more experienced it’s a very credible fun race board, a very serviceable early planer and teamed up with our 8.0m Tushingham Hekler sails gave thoroughly modern high-performance marginal-wind sailing, at as cheap a price as you can find good new windsurfing equipment of any persuasion.
Price £579 with Trim box Select 46cm fin.

BIC TECHNO 283 Tested Windsurf March 2000
Launched at the beginning of last year, Bic were among the first to respond to the new widestyle concept with the Techno 283, and having managed to combine a very aesthetically pleasing design with an excellent price, their board sales shot to a level not seen for nearly ten years Wisely not changing it for 2000 but applying the concept to more sizes instead, the 283 Techno at 152 litres is likely to remain a very popular size, as its sail range is literally anything right up to about 9.0. I say ‘anything’ because with nearly 69cms of width, plenty of mast track range and very evenly spread volume distribution The 283 Techno is so stable and easy to sail that many basic level 2 windsurfers are happily using it with tiny sails and developing short board skills at a very early stage.
The Techno’s thermo-formed construction with durable ASA outer skin also suits this level of sailor more than most as the board is inevitably going to take a few knocks and bangs during the learning process. The supplied 46cm BiC Freefoil Tnm Box fin made by Select is rather large though, and as such it is certainly catering more for the boards upper level ability range, so first time short boarders may want to purchase or swap it for the smaller versions in 40 or 36cm lengths. For better sailors with big sails in light to medium wind strengths though, the fin does suit the board perfectly and produces very satisfactory performance on all points of sailing. But the precise performance ratings as shown in the scores really don’t do it justice amd fails to emphasize its truly outstanding control and overall ease of use. Its ability to nde smoothly over the chop but stay fairly low in the water and not skiner or tail walk means it is not quite as fast as some, but it is alrnost effortless to trim and requires little change in stance through gusts or lulls This combined with its fairly large fin also means it can drive upwind very easily on flat or lumpy water, again perhaps not quite with the speed of say the Visions, but certainly with more ease and control, particularly in rougher seas. Whilst the Techno does sail controllably lower and flatter to the water than most, the nose does have a very reassuringly pronounced scoop nght at the tip, so it does in fact feel very comfortable and forgiving even in quite substantial chop. Whilst it is certainly not radical or snappy to turn, firm and constant pressure to the rail does make it gybe very gracefully. The Techno’s early planing potential is also very good, although its slight extra weight amd control bias characteristics means it’s perhaps not as early as some, but its stable and level platform means it is probably tbe easiest for basic levd sailors to get going. Again like most good widestyles, it also has a good variety of footstrap options for learning to get in them or higher performance and the mast track position easily allows the boom to rest on the back of the board for learning waterstarting.
Overall – Combining durable construction with an even volume distribution, the Techno 283 is without doubt one of the most stable and easiest boards to sail in the test for first time short boarders upwards. Its beautifully even widestyle outline also produces great light wind performance on all points of sailing, for the more experienced sailor.
