Info från Starboard Konfen:
Hi Chris,
Yes you’re right, that board is very big… and very fast. Basically, the idea was to see how wide one could actually go, and to break that mental barrier where one thinks that 1m is enough. Hey, why not, no?
About the new concept slalom boards, I am under pressure to keep everything under wraps until the launch date…
With Jim and Svein, we make ‘extreme’ prototypes often and the results always teach us something that filters down to more ‘standard’ boards, unless the radical design itself doesn’t go into production (Fish, Go, Start, Formula: all those were considered radical when they came out. Which brands do not have similar shapes now?). What we learn is actually stuff that no one else knows, let alone considered… It’s a good way to keep board design moving forward, and windusurfing evolving in interesting directions.
Even though these boards may appear as radical designs, we don’t just try anything and everything. The shapes are always backed by sound theories that we feel confident enough to spend time working on.
I’m sorry if I can’t go into much details regarding how the boards perform and exactly what design cues will feature in production, but I am sure that you can understand that I’d like to keep our ‘innovative design edge’ inside our heads and hands. Let’s wait and see what the future holds…
