X3 sets Kiteboarding World Speed Record
Arinaga, Grand Canaria, July 29, 2003 . . . Robby Naish has just set a new Official World Speed Record for kiteboarding with a speed of 38.47 knots. This World Record Time is recognized by both the International Sailing Federation, and the Commissioner of the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
In gusty, offshore conditions, which were not ideally suited for setting a world record on a kite, Naish used a production X3 8.0 kite, weight jacket, and custom Naish speed needle to achieve an average World Record Speed of 38.47 knots (44.3 mph, 71.29 kph) on the officially recognized 500 meter speed course.
“At this point, we’re still only scratching the surface with kiteboarding in this arena” stated Naish. “The X3 and my board/fin set-up worked remarkably well considering the conditions. We should be able to go a lot faster with steadier winds at the next venue in Camarque, France.”
“The Arinaga course was positioned downwind of several tall buildings and mountains which left large holes in the middle of the 500 meter course” commented Greg Drexler, Naish Team Manager. “We’re quite confident that he’ll have no problem beating his current record with conditions more suitable for a kite.”
The current world speed record for a sailing craft was set in 1993 by Simon McKeon on the Yellow Pages’ Endeavour with an average speed of 46.52 knots. Naish is focused on beating that record as well.
