För känndom (Starboard 2006)
Från Boards forum:
“Hi all,
just got back from 3 weeks in Gnaraloo, where we had 10 days perfect down the line out of 16, not as good windwise as I would have expected for Nov, although it was always at least headhigh, no flat days – but it looks like being a funny season in WA…
For the last 4 days, Per Anderson, Scott McKercher and some of the other Starboard designers/engineers turned up with a whole load of prototypes for 2006 Acid and Evo 74s, looking for feedback, primarily on some new hollow and wood constructions. So the whole camp got to ride Evos in perfect down the line straight after their favouritest wave board.
It was interesting how different in feel the various constructions were, even though there were all with productions tolerances (1mm, 250g). There were some really sweet ones, and some real dogs. But from my point of view the interesting comparison was Evo vs. my old Delta.
The Evo does the following things better:
grovelling/schlogging out through whitewater
jumping
keeping speed up through cocked up gybes
top turn (subjective but I preffered it, some of my mates didnt)Down the line wave boards carve better and are significantly better at bottom turning – to the point where it over-rodes the Evo’s proficiency in other areas for pretty much every rider in camp. Even Scott admitted “They need a lot of drive in the bottom turn” But if you like a tweaked skateboard style riding, popping ariels off whitewater etc then the Evo has some real advantages even at a ‘perfect’ location.
Trying to work out how it would all playback at Bracklesham, Pagham, Brighton – I want one, even at Gnaraloo, for me, there would be a real choice to be made, back here, I dont think there would be any contest.
They also had some very sexy looking all wood/carbon Acid prototypes, didnt get to sail those, but my mate with Acid 74 preferred one of them to his DRAM, they look stunning though.
Be interested to have sailed a 70 – I’m assuming the width would be nearer 54cm and therefore might have bottom turned at speed more by thought, than drive.”
