Favorite weedfins???
Publicerad av erik-loots på 23 januari, 2010 vid 13:22I spoke to a swedish speeder on Bad Hoophuizen FSM 2009, he told in sweden weedfins are needed to surf.
Could you tell what the best weedinfs are for speed?? Do you customize fins for weed?
I would like to write an article on my website about weedfins for speed.
Thank you,
Erik Loots

My personal favourite is the Hurricane fin, but adjusted by Otmar to a weedfin. Only problem is deliverytime since you will have to wait about 6 months before they are delivered
Good results have also been made with the blackdiamond weed fin.Others use Choco speedweed and various lessacher weed fins

Hurricane weed is really nice. The only thing more I would want is an equally good fin, which is made of G10.
We are a few who try to persuade boogie to begin manufacturing a weedfena we’ll see how it goes 🙂

What about underpowered sailing with a weedfin. Let’s say 20kn of wind, is it possible with the current design to go fast (efficient)? Boardspeed 35kn or even more???
With the best straight fins I have seen speeds up to 38-40kn in 20kn of wind on totally flat water in the right windangle….

I’m a total noob and I’m not up to 30 knots yet on water. I like lessacher chameleon a lot. Many guys I know personally likes it a lot too.
Someone here however wrote that it becomes unstable at 35 knots. I might be wrong, but I think many speeders have chameleon but is trying to find something better. -
To get more stability therefor a smaller design could work out well. However a fin with low efficiency will spin-out/unstable when going fast and sailing into a windlull… This could be the case with current weedfins, however if those fins are also unstable in windgusts than you should look for a totally different design……

Yes, we want a dedicated weed-fin! The ones we have is just standard slalomfins that are raked at a bout 45 degrees. More or less anyway.. 🙂
-
The Hurricane weed isn’t just raked, it has the right profile etc and works really well. It’s the only weedfin that I’ve tried that you really can count on even above 35 knots, the feeling is very similar to a normal fin and it’s fits the CA-boards extremly well

Anybody here tried lessacher Duo. According to producer is is quite slalom oriented but never tried it myself.
-
Eric:Im a real amateur surfer but i have tried Lessachers “B+F” with approx 40 degrees rake (i asked Lessacher to make a special fin for me with more rake), and i was amazed! Very thin profile and narrow base so you might have to use a bigger fin, but once up at speed its great, superb grip and zero spinout tendencies, it just goes faster and faster… I know that some people think that Lessacher fins has bad finish and etc, and i agree the finish is not top notch, but the performance is more than adequate!

Hi Eric
We discussed about weedfins in BH
I also discussed a lot with Martin V M he sails for C3

See you on the rematch SWE-NEDGreetings from Aruba

Hi kinetic, that fin looks good, nice job from wolfgang, however the outline seems to me impossible to give the fin a wide range with stable behaviour like straight fins.
I have some idea’s together with Joerg Sonntag, but first I would like to know what is being used so far for weed. I would like to start with an article on speedsurfingblog about the need for good weedfins.
I don’t know on when we are able to do some research on our own for weedfins. I haven’t sailed a weedfin myself. Did surf some 30 degree raked fins..

Eric: The Lessacher fin i have could use some more rake, approx 45 degrees. As it is now it will collect weed occasionally, one reason could be the “razor sharp” leading edge. And you are correct at slow speeds (25-30 knots) this fin is somewhat sensitive, if you push really hard then it can be forced to spinout, but i did not notice this over 30 knots. Compared to my other weedfin (Performance Fins Weed 29, Anders Bringdahl) this fin has a lot less lift. The board goes much smoother with this fin than the Performance Fin, no worries about smaller chop just push hard with confidence. Perhaps the fin could use a little thicker profile (i believe its sub 8mm…) ang gain some lift that way, its also a very sensitive fin when concerning vulnerability, you hit one hard object and the fin will be smashed since it has a really thin profile the last 10-12cm…
I myself have some ideas of trying new fin-ideas since i have just established contact with a promising company who has been building “carbon creations of most kinds” for the last 20 years… -
45 degrees is the best??? That’s a lot of rake.
I have another question. Is there a performance difference between different slalomboards with weedfins???
-
Yes its quite much rake, but “we” have learned that around 37-40 degrees is just a bit too little when considering ALL weed-conditions, when there is a lot of weed then you do need 45 degrees, if its less, or not so thick weed, you might get away with less rake. I sail with weedfins almost everytime so i cant even remember what it is to sail a “non-raked” fin:grin:. I believe that a lot of PB’s in Sweden has been made with weedfins, i would not say that weedfins are slow, they feel just a little different.
-
Yes, 45 degrees is the best. My Choco SpeedWeeds have only 42 degrees, it works, but sometimes the darn grass sticks to it anyway.
I don´t think the boards differ that much. The same guys who is fast with straight fins are fast with the weed-fins.
