Thinking about a new boom, kinda interested in trying the new V-Grip idea, seems like I have two options Aeron or Prolimit, what would you guys choose ? How is the quality on the prolimit Booms?
Feel free to reply in Swedish as always…

Hi, I’ve looked at and felt the prolimit at onwater in Lund, and like any alu-monocoque it felt quite sturdy, but then again I’ve never sailed with one myself. Aeron on the other hand has quite a good reputation around the world, many hire-centres use these and I’ve sailed one and it felt nice. If the difference in price is not huge I would personally go with the aeron, however if it’s more than 500 setting them apart I would go with the cheaper, as i honestly don’t think that there are any major differences, both being alu and monocoque, and a horrific wipe-out would kill either one of them all the same :santa:

Thanks for the advice, went in to Onwater.se and they had a normal prolimit (not the V-Grip) so I could see the head and compare it to all the other booms they had there. The thing about the Prolimit was that it was a 160-220 so it should cover all my sails, nice for traveling, if I don’t like how it feels at full extension I can always get the bigger Aeron for the biggest 2 sails.

On the subject Aeron VS ProLimit my opinion is that both booms are manufactured in the same factory, perhaps even that the ProLimit boom is just a re-labeled Aeron boom. I have both an Aeron 230-290 Monocoque Carbon and a ProLimit Team Carbon 180-240. The booms have 100% identical tailpieces, the heads are more or less identical, as are the reduced diameter in the grip area. Aeron booms can be found quite cheap. Aeron represents a lot of bang for your bucks, my opinion is that you should go with a carbon boom, not that they are lighter but just for their strength and that they bring out more performance of your sail…

Thanks Kinetic, I actually came to the same conclusion myself, I have decide on the AL360 E3 Carbon, they had one at onwater.se and it looked like super quality.
I have done alot of searching around and found this test below on another forum which has the AL360 as one of the stiffest booms on the market, even better than the X9 ! And it is 160-220cm which covers all my sales, at 5000SEK, I think it will be a good deal.

Here is a copy/paste from the test:

German magazine SURF tested the majority of booms currently available on the market. The results below come directly from this test. Stiffness in N/mm measured at 10 and 44 cm extension. The higher the values, the stiffer the boom is. All booms tested are in the 180-240 cm range. Brand, model, price / stiffness + 10 cm / stiffness + 44

As you can see a proper alu boom is nearly as stiff as a cheap carbon boom. The magazine also noted that a hybrid boom with carbon back end doesn’t add any stiffness or added value to the boom except the higher price.

Al360 is good choice. But the stiffnes “Surf” measured in this table does not really show how well the boom work. Maybe they also mention this in the test.Very stiff boom with bad frontend is worse then soft boom with good frontend. I have compared b-level carbon boom with alubom with premium Mauisails frontend and alubom felt much more stiff and Easy to pump. So frontend is very important. Stiffnes up and down on mounted boom can be very different from stiffnes in and out. When you pump you go out and down.
