The South West Ireland PWA Wave Grand Prix

    5-11th October

    Day two: 6th October

Windsurfing history was made today in the waters of the Dingle Peninsula. At just after midday the green flag went up to signal the start of the first heat in the south west Ireland PWA Wave Grand Prix. The wind and waves provided the perfect platform for the fleet gathered here and the waves had the most liberal littering of boards and sails ever seen in Brandon Bay.

In the opening heat Anders Bringdal S-10 (Simmer, Liberty) knocked out local resident Guy Cribb K-9. Whilst Jason Polakow KA-1111 (JP Australia, Neil Pryde) proved to be a tough draw for Dutch sailor Ben Van Der Steen H-57 (Fantaic, North) and ripped along the three metre surf cruising through to the next round. Brit Jamie Hawkins K-96 (Neil Pryde) also went through and will now meet Jason in the next round.

After winning the heat Anders was back on the beach to watch the next round of competition.

Anders: ”Definitely good to get out there. It’s good to be a part of history and sail in the opening round of the first ever Irish PWA contest. I never like being in the first heat, you always feel like a bit of a guinea pig but it wasn’t so bad.”

    Day five: 9th October

Today has delivered everything we have been waiting for and there was no end to the drama as the after noon unravelled. The wind increased as predicted, blowing from the south west. The swell drove in providing plenty of ramps and a number of good sets allowing sailors to connect wave rides from the outside to the beach.
Keen to take advantage of the conditions the contest continued until dusk and the hard core of spectators were there to cheer the sailors on. Translating the action for the crowds was Peter Hart, taking shelter in the notice board trailer, which was made full use of by everyone.
There were a series of spectacular wins today but the final victory of the day went to Ciso Goya A-211 (Fanatic, North). Cisco entered the contest in as number one seed and is on form to keep him in that position. Second place went to Josh Angulo US-11 (RRD) who is looking on excellent form.
One of the first upsets of the day came from Micah Buzianis US-34 (Drops, North) when he took out Livi Siver USA-0 (F2, North). After taking out the young wave demon Micah said: ”I don’t’ know man I landed my third ever backloop on port tack and I guess that helped.”
After studying the judges sheets Micah added,
”It was real close. I had one he had the other and I took it on the third. It was real close on both jumps and waves but I got it!”
The next three heats provided a series of major upsets that ensured there was no shortage of thrill s for the enthusiastic crowds that gathered on the beach and endured the biting winds and squally showers that battered the beach.
It was a loaded heat that provided a dramatic result. Anders Bringdal S-10 (RRD, Simmer, Liberty) knocked out Jason Polakow KA-1111 (JP Australia, Neil Pryde) Anders performed some great jumps including a huge backloop on the outside. Good jumping scores helped Anders to beat Jason and move through to the next round.
Anders: ”I am really enjoying it today. I have had a great day and that is the first time that I have ever beaten Jason.”
The second half of the heat offered even greater drama and excitement. Eric Troostheide H-90 (Mistral, North) sailed an amazing heat; with good wave ride connections all the way in and a balls to the wall double forward attempt in the closing seconds. Bjorn Dunkerbeck E-11 (F2, Neil Pryde) completed a huge backloop but was struggling to land big air with a 5.8 in overpowering conditions.
Eric took victory in convincing style, all three judges awarding him victory.
Eric: ”Oh my god this place gets more and more beautiful everyday. I’ve been training hard, saving myself up for this event. I went out there feeling good. I landed my second backloop and knew I had two good wave rides all the way in with ten seconds to go I just wanted to pull the trigger. I looked for a ramp and went for the double.”
As if the after noon hadn’t already provided enough drama Josh Angulo US-11 (RRD) took out wave riding legend Robby Naish US-1111 (Mistral, Naish).
Robby: ”It’s really close on wave scores. There’s a lot of difference on the jumps but wave scores are too close and that’s having a big effect on the outcome of the heats. For sure I should have had a better heat. If I had a smaller sail that would have helped on the jumps but I think the gaps on wave riding should have been bigger.”
After taking out Robby Josh continued to romp through the heats displacing Nik Baker K-66 (Mistral, North) who put on a magnificent display of riding and high scoring jumps. Anders managed to knock out a super charged Eric Troostheide and it looked like adrenaline was on tap. In the second quarter final Josh Stone USA-6 (JP Australia, Neil Pryde) prevented Kevin Pritchard US-3 (Bic, Gaastra) from progressing. It was a tough call for Kevin who appeared to sail a very strategic and well timed heat with a high backloop on the outside and a perfectly timed ride all the way in, rounded off with a forward on the face.
The final between Josh and Cisco came just before dusk but was well worth the wait. Josh was riding the waves with raw power and took everything he could from each wave. Cisco went high and picked good ramps on the outside. Despite Josh’s wave riding prowess Cisco took the higher total score and emerged the victor.
Csico: ” Wow I don’t know what to say. I’m just enjoying it so much here. We’re all having such a good time and I’m just real happy to win. This is just the star t there is much more to come here!”
Josh: ” I’ve had a great day. Sure it was a shame not to win but I’m real happy with my riding and it was great to beat Robby I blew it in the final but it’s all good. Beating Naish really set it off for me. That kind of set off my momentum, it made me think wow I can go all the way, then Baker and Bringdal. My wave riding pulled me through a lot of the heats but I’m second and real happy with that.

Nä, men det går ju bra för Angulo och Goya. Bringan är ju snarare down the line gubbe än ”on shore expert”.

    Ireland rocks!
