British Airways Will Continue to Carry Surfboards as Checked Baggage, For Now October 28, 2007 PRESS RELEASE
The good news is, you can still book that Costa Rican surfari. At least, for now. Responding to the recent concern among surfers, British Airways representatives at LAX say the airline will continue to accommodate surfboards beyond November‘s proposed restriction date and until a freight forwarding solution is in place.
This announcement comes after an onslaught of pressure from aggravated surf communities. Last week, both the International and British Surfing Associations released statements supporting a petition to lobby the airline. Over 5,200 signatures have been gathered since.
Tempers first flared in September when the British Airways website began listing surfboards—along with javelins, pole vaults, and canoes—as sporting equipment it would no longer carry, effective November 6th, 2007. Golf clubs, musical instruments, and ski gear, however, were still permitted under these modifications.
Representatives are now saying the website has often been “misleading or wrong” in regard to current policy. The checked baggage page, for instance, states that the maximum weight for luggage is 23kg, but the airline has always accepted up to 70kg. And though British Airways has been pushing for luggage reduction for over a year, no enforcements have been made.
And when it comes to the current policy, representatives are the best people to talk to for accurate information. Call 800–AIRWAYS.
