Honestly, I have no idea what that sail is. Or I should say I have an idea as to what it is, just not who made it or where it came from. This would seem to be Bjorn’s secret “black” project. I can’t wait to see more!

Let’s hope they get some classic Sotavento wind!

Here’s that mysterious post:

“Greetings:

History was made quietly at the Sotavento sailing site on Fuerteventura late this afternoon. An unexpected gale arose sending thus-far disappointed record seekers Roddy Lewis and Bjorn Dunkerbeck out onto the water.

For this day the wind co-operated reaching 8+Bft during several passes through the 500 meter speed course. By evening a best speed of 54.55 knots, or 100.38 Kilometers per hour had been credited to Mr. Dunkerbeck.

Presuming ratification by the IYRU, that speed moves Mr. Dunkerbeck and his rig to the head of the list of the all-time fastest sail-powered craft, besting the high-tech trimaran Yellow Pages by an incredible 10.76 knots.

Further details will be provided as they become available.”

That post on the G-site is by an unregistered “Frederick Wigington, IYRU” of no fixed address and references “ratification by IYRU”…yeah ?? So, before we all go nuts over the technicalities of sailing to 50kts, (let alone 54 kts), maybe we should consider what the IYRU has to do with it ?
It USED to have ALL to do with WSSRC ratification..back in the old days

However, WSSRC is now a committee of ISAF..and IYRU doesn’t feature..

Now, should we discuss 54 kts ??

I for one hope he’s blown it right out of the water, but ….

I’ve sailed Sotavento. I know Bjorn. If were ever going to happen, it would be there and it would be him.
