Easier to tack, wide or narrow board?
Hi all!
1) I am looking for a light-wind board. My problem is that I have to sail through a narrow ‘key hole’ 20 meters wide between two islands to get out to the wind. The swell gets up to 1m (dyningar) and pushes through this hole, and is choppy. This means I have to tack about 10 times, and I can’t afford to fall in due to rocks on both sides. The board I have now for that place is 65cm wide, but it can still be a bit tricky with each tack to get through without the risk of getting off balance falling in.
My question is whether a wider board will be more stable; say 75-85 cm wide, for tacking?
I am waiting for a second-hand board to turn up so I can’t be too picky with model or size either.
2) The next question is what volume would suit too? Problem is I want a board with enough volume that it is comfortable to tack in these bumpy conditions but fun enough and gives a short-board feel. In Skåne I ride a wave and freestyle board but these are too small to tack comfortably when it is rough, and for my light-wind sails.
I guess I am looking for a board of 120-130L. Do these boards still have a quick feeling, or are they more of a plank that is stuck to the water.
I am 70kg, am an experienced windsurfer, and will be using 6.0m and 7.4m sails (no cambers).
Your thoughts?
