“Pritchard who was defeated in the first round of the single elimination made one of the greatest comebacks in PWA history…….”THE 2000 PWA MAUI WORLD CUP
PRESENTED BY CHILLI, NEIL PRYDE AND DA-KINE
APRIL 13th – 18th 2000.
Press Release: 16th April.
It was a sensational day of action here today at the 2000 PWA Maui World Cup
with world number two Kevin Pritchard(Bic/Gaastra)(US3) making an extraordinary comeback through the men’s double elimination and stealing victory from yesterday’s
winner, Keith Taboul (US60) after defeating him twice in the final. In the women’s final Angela Cochran (US21) held on to first place but had to
fend
of a brave challenge from Kelly Moore (US6) after Moore had won the first of
two finals.Pritchard who was defeated in the first round of the single elimination made
one of the greatest comebacks in PWA history and sailed throughout the day with
incredible consistency. With strong trades blowing up to 30 knots and 2-4
feet surf conditions were ideal for jumps and wave action. Pritchard who is
from California sailed with clinical precision throughout the day and rarely
failed to land any of his radical moves. The day will probably be more remembered for the insane double loops from
Argentinean wave hero Francisco Goya (A211) who blew the crowds away with
two perfectly controlled double forward loops. Cisco was on fire today and
had the spectators cheering at his aerial antics. The doubles are already
being talked about as the some of the best jumps ever seen in windsurfing
history. Goya was starting his heats well upwind and always looked like he
was setting himself up for something radical. His aim was to go full speed
from the inside and hit his ramp right at the beginning of the heat. Sailing
with incredible speed the Argentinean hit the apex of the waves and
catapulted into a spiraling frenzy, which he somehow managed to control and
land perfectly. The crowds and sailors on the beach were in awe of his
insane aerial wizardry and Goya received ovations each tome he returned to
the beach. Cisco, who at one point today looked unbeatable was eventually
defeated by Kevin Pritchard and Josh Stone (US6) after landing a double but
failing to find any waves during the heat.Pritchard then went on to defeat Josh Stone and Josh Angulo (US11) in
consecutive heats leaving only Taboul between himself and victory. In the
heat against Stone, Pritchard had his work cut out after the radical
Hawaiian opened up the heat with a monster push loop. Pritchard replied with
a huge delayed one handed forward and then went on to rip apart the better
set waves of the heat. Angulo put up a poor performance for his standards in
the next heat leaving the door wide open for Pritchard to advance into the
final.Keith Taboul had a disastrous time in the first of two finals and failed to
get in sync with the set waves, Pritchard meanwhile was ripping it up in the
surf and landed several one handed aerials during the heat. In the second
final Taboul managed to get his act together but was still no match for the
consistent power of Pritchard. Once again the Californian world number two
sailed another flawless heat carving up the waves and scoring highly on
every ride. The judge’s decision was unanimous in favour of Pritchard
leaving Taboul having to settle for second place with Josh Angulo back in
third. In the woman’s final Kelly Moore pulled some big aerials but failed to match
the overall performance of Angela Cochran. Moore who defeated Jennifer
Henderson (US7) to reach the final managed to defeat Cochran in the first of
two fiercely contested heats. In the second final Moore failed to clock up
three decent wave scores whilst Cochran sailed more intelligently and picked
the better waves.Angela Cochran
“I had a great time, it was good fun. I didn’t care that I lost the first
final I just wanted to go out on the water, I had so much fun the first time
I just wanted to go again. I am stoked but even if I had lost it would have
been fine”Kevin Pritchard
“It was a tough day, I think it might be the first time somebody has come
back all the way through the double elimination and win. I sailed a lot of
heats and I am pretty stoked. A couple of times I felt so tired I did not
know if I could go out and sail the next heat. I hung in there so I am
pretty stoked!”Keith Taboul
“Kevin was well warmed up by the time he reached the final, what can I say.
I had a terrible first final and then the second heat I just sailed ok.
Yesterday I was sailing a lot better, I am just glad that everybody has been
so stoked for me to have won yesterday and been in the final today”
