Hi all:
Last week a fellow windsurfer had a fatal accident in Jericoacoara, Brasil.
I will tell this story here not because I like to talk about such events but
because there might be something to learn about it.For those who know Jericoacoara you know that on the right side of the beach
is where the ocean swell contours the right point and gets in the bay making
for some small chop which is barely surfable but it’s great for jumping.
It’s really shallow but enough to play on. It seems this guy, who was a
windsurfing instructor in Rio de Janeiro and therefore a very good sailor,
was throwing forwards on these small waves. He had already done a few until
apparently on the middle of a rotation his feet came off the straps and his
head hit the board pretty hard. He was unconscious but was quickly attended
because of the shallow water. Jericoacoara is very bad in terms of medical
assistance and is also a long way from a major city hospital but according
to medical examinations htere was nothing that could be done. It was almost
instantaneous. The cause of death was a traumatism to the head. Amazingly he
never bleeded and the board was completely intact, not even a scratch.I had never heard about such a fatalistic event. Maybe we should all wear
helmets??? Would a helmet have made a big difference? I think yes. I am sure
that anyone attempting loops should go out without a helmet. I don’t see the
pros doing it though. Nobody wears helmets in Rio. It’s not a “cool thing”
(how about that for a stupid macho attitude). What about the helmet use in
other countries these days? Is it compulsory anywhere?Cheers
