Here’s to more specialty wave events!
It’s truly man for man now on the
Slalom 42 race courseThe 2007 season brings exciting new changes and challenges to the competitive scene, such as the new specialist wave event, The Cape Verde PWA World Cup in February. Plus, following on from last years AGM at Sylt, there will be a few changes to the way things are done at PWA events.
Wave events will now have a 48-man fleet in the men’s division. This will save considerable time at contests giving a better chance of getting good results and successful events, especially if suitable conditions are only brief during the holding periods allowed.
Under the new format, the top 16 seeds will be seeded through to the second round, creating a round of qualifying heats in the first round that will give upcoming sailors more opportunity to pass through heats and gain competition experience.
Based on the overwhelming wishes of the racing fleet, it has also been decided that Slalom 42 will now be run on a “no rules” basis, meaning that technically anything goes on the slalom course. The removal of the current direct refereeing system, will eliminate any difficulty or inconsistency in refereeing calls, and will create a self policing situation whereby any sailor infringing another will be more likely to cause themselves hindrance than anyone else.
We have already mentioned Cape Verde, which will kick the 2007 tour off, but the PWA is also proud to announce the confirmations of Alacati, after a successful inaugural event in 2006, Pozo, Fuerteventura and Sylt. There are plenty more venues awaiting confirmation of dates or status, so watch this space!

Jag kommer vara på Sal 19-26 feb, inte helt fel att de väljer att starta den 22 feb. Är Vindsurfingen helt separat från kitetouren eller kör de någon kitetävling samtidigt?
De kommer väl antagligen köra PontaPreta, hittade en rätt inspirerande film därifrån.

When the oceanswell is westerly, the surfers in st. Maria wake up and nervously start arranging there gear on their cars, locals walking the streets with surfboards under their arms…. the town changes. For some geographical reason on the oceanbottom the swell at Ponta Preta is pumped up higher and releases it’s energy on this pointbreak with a spectacular, world famous result.Breathless… is what you will be gazing when a set of waves comes in. Its starts to break a few hundred meters out of the black rocks and rolls clean and hollow over a length of 300 meter untill it hits the white sandy beach in the form of a killing shorebreak.
This is the spot where the Kite Wavemasters is held, it’s the backyard of Josh Angulo, 2003 PWA world champion. It is possible you will see Bjorn Dunckerbeck and many other international (former) wind- kite- and surfchampions. The place has an atmosphere of good vibration.
The wind is mostly cross offshore or dead off and sometimes sideshore from the right. This, combined with the huge waves which can easily reach 5 meters and breaking sometimes just before 10 meters from razorsharp rocks, witholds most kitesurfers to go out here but just watch the spectacle. .And I don’t tell them wrong. Ponta Preta is not a place to learn kiting nor a place to learn waveriding cause the smallest mistake can cost you your kite, board or worse. Only try this place if you feel comfortable in over (double) manhigh waves with sometimes gusty winds… and a lot of co-wave users like (wind)surfers, bodyboarders… respect the line up. Don’t loose your board cause the rocks will eat it and don’t loose the kite or somebody in Brazil will find it .
