Mycket skadad utrustning i shorebraket som väntat.

The day started with a torrential downpour, followed by 4 hours of warm sunshine and light northeasterly winds. Stark contrast to the ominous weather forecast which predicted bft 5 to 7 increasing to storm force 10!!! Perfect wind strength for wave competition but not conducive to building the swell when blowing side off to offshore. Race director Klaus Michel’s call at the skippers meeting could only go one way until the predicted heavy conditions actually arrived.

Racing was the word and by lunchtime 17 to 21 knots was being recorded in the course area accompanied by everyone’s favorite liquid sunshine. The rain abated but the wind continued to build prior to the first start. Tackling Sylt’s angry spiting shore break was a big enough challenge for most of the fleet and a significant quantity of laminated carbon was transformed into a splintered mess as mast after mast was demolished. .

    RACE 1
Ladies first! The women’s fleet got away cleanly & first to the windward mark was France’s Geraldine Jambert (Starboard), clear ahead of Dorota Staszewska (Starboard/Neil Pryde) and Lucy Horwood (AHD/Gaastra). Lucy Horwood took advantage of an uncharacteristic error by Dorota and forced her way to the front of the pack and kept going, pulling out a convincing lead by the downwind mark. With the ever-increasing breeze the girls looked remarkably comfortable on their 9.0m2 sails & 68cm fins. Lucy Horwood continued to extend her lead out to about 300m by the finish ahead of her racing nemesis, Polands Dorota Staszewska and fellow Brit, Christine Johnston (Starboard/Neil Pryde) who pulled up to 3rd.

    LUCY HORWOOD
“I was exhausted after rigging my three sails this morning and I feel so weak after the last few days of illness, I am amazed I made it round! I was so overpowered on my 9.0 but I managed to stay on and hold it together till the finish. I am so happy to win the first one. I definitely need to sleep now!”

    DOROTA STASZEWSKA
“That was a really hard race, not just the wind, which must have been 30 knots but the waves were so unpredictable, I was flying most of the time so I made a mistake and Lucy got ahead.”

The men’s fleet got away after one general recall sent seven sailors back to the beach including local favorite Bernd Flessner (F2/Neil Pryde). Bernd could only reflect “Well, its not exactly the best start I could have hoped for!” First to the windward mark was Canadian Sam Ireland (Starboard/North) and held on for the first leg before being overhauled by the blur of Antoine Albeau (AHD/Neil Pryde) on the limit on 11.0 traveling at warp factor 6! There was no stopping Antoine who powered on, sailing flawlessly to victory. Back on the beach Antoine, in his usual modest manner had this to say:-

    ANTOINE ALBEAU
“That was probably the hardest race I have ever sailed, I was so overpowered on my 11.0 that I was totally flying on the upwind leg. I think I will have to change down for the next one. It is the best start I could have wished for.”

Following Antoine with a characteristically solid performance was Micah Buzianis (Mistral/North) and just to prove there is life in the old dog yet, PWA chairman and former racing world champion Phil McGain (Gaastra) stayed on his feet and held on to his 11.5m2 to muscle into 3rd position. This was probably due to the pressure from his TEAM team-mate and PWA racing world champion and current Formula world champion, Kevin Pritchard (Bic/Gaastra) who worked his way up to 4th. Then it was back to the beach for a quick bowl of soup and anything heavy you could eat to help compensate for ever freshening conditions.

With the wind now pushing 30 knots the Race director Klaus Michel decided to call it a day for the women, much to Lucy Horwood’s relief. No such respite for the men though and after some minor course alterations it was back out through that vicious shore break, which once again claimed its fair share of masts and booms.

    RACE 2
Every sailor was now on their 3rd choice and smallest registered sail, with some wishing they had the option of something smaller than 9.8m2! Once again the mighty Antoine Albeau displayed awesome board speed and control to secure another bullet.

    ANTOINE ALBEAU
“That was definitely the hardest race I have ever sailed, I was so overpowered on my 9.8m2 etc.” Familiar comments from the current PWA world freestyle champion! Without doubt an outstanding performance on the year’s hardest day of racing.

Showing consistent form with a 2nd position to add to his 5th from the first race was formula specialist, Poland’s finest, Wojtek Brzozowski (Starboard/Neil Pryde) who seemed to be comfortable with the rough weather. This was definitely a day for the big guys and they don’t get much bigger than Finian Maynard who was starting to find top gear and thundered home in 3rd. Muscle award for the day had to go to Micah Buzianis, who returned to the beach in 4th place, scratching his head and wondering where his port harness line had gone, sailing unhooked on one tack with a 9.9m2 in 30knots and rough seas has to be the biggest work out going! By now the wind had increased even more and many of the wave sailors were out getting acclimatized to the conditions on 4.5m2 sails! Sensibly that was it for one stormy days racing and the weather forecast suggests much more to come for the rest of the week.

The day started with glorious sunshine, and light northeasterly breeze. Most likely a racing day. Many competitors busied themselves with essential repairs after yesterday’s heavy conditions took their toll on the Formula equipment. By 11am the wind was reasonably consistent at 14 to 17 knots side to side-offshore and with considerably smoother water conditions than yesterday racing was the call. The women’s fleet was first away with their 2nd race.

    RACE 2 – WOMEN
A clean start for the full women’s fleet in now breezy, but less challenging conditions than yesterday.
Dorota Staszewska (Starboard/Neil Pryde) was first to the windward mark and sailed a faultless race to win cleanly ahead of Great Britain’s Christine Johnston (Starboard/Neil Pryde) and France’s Jenny Le Bihan (Bic/Neil Pryde). Yesterday’s victor Lucy Horwood logged a disappointing 4th in the lighter conditions.

    RACE 3 –WOMEN
Dorota once again played the shifts and cruised to victory ahead of an improving Lucy Horwood, Christine Johnston and Jenny Le Bihan. By now the wind had freshened further and the women were all on their smallest rigs, which for most was still 9.0m2!

    RACE 4- WOMEN
Race 4 was almost a complete reflection of race 3 with Dorota, Lucy and Christine heading the pack followed by Geraldine Jambert (Starboard) posting her best result since showing early promise in yesterdays survival conditions.

    RACE 5- WOMEN
Once again a flying Dorota Staszewska sailed an immaculate race and led from start to finish leaving fellow British sailors to fight it out for second position. This time it was Christine Johnston getting the second spot ahead of a fading Lucy Horwood. France’s Geraldine Jambert repeated her 4th place from the previous race.

After 5 races the women’s standings are: –

    1st DOROTA STASZEWSKA (STARBOARD/NEIL PRYDE) 2.8pts
    2nd LUCY HORWOOD (AHD/GAASTRA) 7.7pts
    3rd CHRISTINE JOHNSTON (STARBOARD/NEIL PRYDE) 9.0pts

    DOROTA STASZEWSKA
“I am really pleased with my performance today. I could not have sailed better and my equipment was working great. I really enjoyed the racing as it was much easier than yesterday!”

With four firsts today Dorota has established a strong lead, her only minor disappointment was disqualification from yesterdays race 1 for a premature start. The two British girls will have to fight hard to challenge for the top spot!

    RACE 3 – MEN
Triumph for the captain! PWA chairman Phil McGain (Gaastra) could not contain his joy, and was beaming from ear to ear after romping home to victory in today’s first race. Probably the most experienced racer in the fleet Phil reveled in the shifty tactical conditions and cruised home ahead of Australian Steve Allen (Fanatic) and Kevin Pritchard (Bic/ Gaastra).

    PHIL McGAIN
“I was really comfortable on my 11.0m2, it was much easier sea conditions than yesterday even though the wind was pushing over 20 knots. That was great, I can’t wait to go again!“

    RACE 4 – MEN
This time it was the current PWA racing leader and number 1 seed coming into this event, Australian Steve Allen (Fanatic) to make the best of the shifty conditions and take the top spot. Antoine Albeau (AHD/NEIL PRYDE) pushed hard for second place ahead of countryman Patrice Belbeoc’h (NEIL PRYDE) logging his best result to date. Two other sailors post their best results to date in 4th and 5th respectively were British Virgin Islander Devon Boulon (MISTRAL/NORTH) and Polish Michael Polanowski (STARBOARD).

    RACE 5 – MEN
Probably Antoine Albeau showing complete control when the going gets tough once again dominated the windiest race of the day. With his worst result to date being his 5th in race 3 Antoine is starting to build a convincing lead. Kevin Pritchard started to find form posting 2nd and Argentinean Costa Hoeval Gonzalo (STARBOARD/NEIL PRYDE) showed great promise and was first to the windward mark and finished third.
    S02 Phil McGain
    Courtesy of PWA/Williams

    RACE 6 – MEN
The last race of the day saw a stylish performance give Wojtek Brzozowski top spot ahead of Israel’s Arnon Dagan (Fanatic) who has show great speed but lacked consistency. Continuing his strong performance Antoine Albeau strengthened his overall lead.

    WOJTEK BRZOZOWSKI
“It has been a hard day but I managed two good races and two bad, I actually preferred yesterdays strong conditions and I was totally comfortable on my 11.0m2.”

The men’s division is now headed by Antoine but with only 13 points separating the next 5 places there is everything to play for. The forecast almost guarantees another batch of strong wind races and great promise of waves later in the week; the large crowds gathered on the beach will be kept enthralled

    Men’s Standings (subject to protest)
    1st Antoine Albeau (AHD/Neil Pryde) 7.1pts
    2nd Phil McGain (Gaastra) 21.7pts
    3rd Steve Allen (Fanatic) 21.7pts
    4th Kevin Pritchard (Bic/Gaastra) 22pts
    5th Wojtek Brzozowski (Starboard/Neil Pryde) 25.7pts

    Det tätnar i toppstriden.

Rain was the alarm call this morning but by the time skippers meeting was underway for the wave sailors at 10 a.m. the skies had cleared. The swell was similar to yesterday, so almost enough for wave competition were it not for a distinct lack of wind. All hold again for the wave sailors, time to take up positions in the dunes and get ready to guess the top five for Toasty’s sweep for the next race. Racers briefing at noon saw an improvement with 6 to 10 knots in the course area. Once again, behaving in the true gentlemen’s fashion that we have become accustomed to, Race Director Klaus Michael sent the Women out for their 9th race of the championship.

    Race 9 – Women
With the wind strength now in the 7 to 9 knot band, the women had the course to themselves once more.

The sea state favored Lucy Horwood (AHD/Gaastra) but the wind strength suited Dorota Staszewska (Starboard/Gaastra). Dorota has a convincing lead at this point of the contest so Lucy needed a repeat of yesterday’s victory to start putting the pressure back on the Polish no.1. Dorota had other ideas though and by the windward mark, was 50 meters clear of Lucy who was hotly pursued by fellow Brit., Christine Johnston (Starboard/Neil Pryde). Christine overhauled Lucy on the downwind leg and gained on Dorota. Second time around Dorota found a second gear and rocketed to the windward mark, extended her lead again to over 200 meters. The two British girls were battling it out between themselves, Lucy Horwood rounding ahead of Christine Johnston, who was carrying 11m2 managed to go deeper downwind and make it to the inside first but had less speed from the gybe and Lucy easily passed her on the final reach. French rider Geraldine Jambert (Starboard) and Italy’s Verena Fauster (Starboard/Gaastra) had a photo finish for 4th position with Geraldine just edging it.

    Race 10 – Women
The wind was now gusting through a little stronger, up to 16 knots at times. This gave Lucy Horwood a little more speed and enabled her to tussle closely all the way round with Dorota. Lucy rounded the last gybe mark just ahead of Dorota with only a 500-meter reach to go. It was neck and neck all the way to the wire. Dorota got a nose ahead to take the victory to force Lucy back into that all to familiar second spot. Geraldine Jambert followed up in third, posting her best result of the contest so far.

    LUCY HORWOOD
“I was so close to getting that one but as I rounded the last gybe and went to pull on a little more outhaul, I somehow got my finger stuck in the cleat. Doh!“

    DOROTA STASZEWSKA
“I am very pleased that it has all come together so well at exactly the right time.“

With only five possible races to go Dorota has an unassailable lead and is currently counting perfect 8 first places from 10 races with 2 discards. The battle for the 2nd and 3rd slots looks set to continue to the bitter end though and could go either way.

    Women’s rankings after 10 races
    1. Dorota Staszewska (Starboard/ Neil Pryde) 5.6 pts
    2. Lucy Horwood (AHD/Gaastra) 14.4 pts
    3. Christine Johnston (Starboard/Neil Pryde) 20.0 pts.

    Race 9 – men
The men’s fleet is in completely different circumstances, with everything to play for, each race is becoming more critical than the last. Only 16 points separate the top five and in such a competitive fleet consistency is a rare commodity. Antoine Albeau (AHD/Neil Pryde) has led the field from day one and has also been the most consistent sailor with 3 victories and his two discards currently a 7th and a 5th. Antoine has seen his leading margin eroded by an improving Kevin Pritchard (Bic/Gaastra) who is now only 4 points behind.

After one general recall the fleet got away cleanly with the port end of the line favored by the main contenders. At the windward mark it was Israel’s Arnon Dagan (Fanatic) showing the way about 5 board lengths in front of Wojtek Brzozowski (Starboard/Neil Pryde) and Kevin Pritchard. The top three remained unchanged for the downwind leg despite Wojtek’s best efforts by heading lower and pumping like a machine. Antoine Albeau was feeling the pressure back in 8th place but he never gives up and was giving it everything. For the 2nd lap Antoine and countryman Patrice Belbeoc’h chose to take the right side with the rest of the fleet favoring the left, which looked a better choice from the beach. Antoine must have realized this and tacked off up the middle of the course to cover the pack.

Second time at the windward mark and Wojtek had snagged 1st position with Arnon and Kevin not far behind. Antoine was up to 7th through sheer determination. The downwind blast to the line saw the top three unchanged with Wojtek getting 50 meters clear. Steve Allen (Fanatic) filled the no. 4 spot followed by Micah Buzianis (Mistral/North) and Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Starboard/Neil Pryde) ahead of Antoine.

    WOJTEK BROZOWSKI
“My 12.5m2 Brazil sail is holding up well and I have really good speed downwind so I was confident I could hold on once I got ahead. I am happy with all my results and I have been working very hard training before this event. Slowly I am getting better and better each day.”

ARNON DAGAN, with a big grin on his face,
“I was always copying Wojtek these last days but this time he copied me! He tried to punish me on the first downwind but he went too low and I nearly held him off.”

    Men’s rankings after 9 races

    1. Antoine Albeau (AHD/ Neil Pryde) 16.1 pts.
    2. Kevin Pritchard (Bic/Gaastra) 18.4 pts
    3. Wojtek Brzozowski (Starboard/Neil Pryde) 27.4 pts
    4. Steve Allen (Fanatic) 27.7 pts
    5. Phil McGain (Gaastra) 33.7 pts.
    6. Micah Buzianis (Mistral/North) 40.5 pts.
