About the Fish
At 5’8” by 19”, the Fish instantly has the appeal of the modern fish shaped surfboard: extra width for easier riding through mush, a wider tail for snappier turning in weak surf and a single concave running to a double concave towards the tail to jet as much water and drive to the quad fins as possible. This is a custom board with the quality assurance and super-toughness of a factory produced model.
The Fish on the water
The wide, stable riding platform and the genorous pads and grippy mid-deck make the Fish a very easy gybe and a doddle to ride on out of the straps. The four fins give incredible directional stability and the Fish just tracks through the water like it’s lazer guided. And Xelerator seem to have the thickness of the rails spot on because when leaning hard into a bottom turn or smacking a lip the rail stays buried and connected unlike some wider boards which can skip out on the steeper turns.
The Fish draws a very nice, powerful arc across the wave – it feels like riding with a stiffened up thruster and the board feels longer than it really is. So coming up to hit the lip and applying maximum front foot pressure, you are able to wallop the tail through the turn and never loose an inch of grip: all the energy gets transferred into the move and the rail never bounces out. On the steep point break waves we tested the Fish in, it never missed a beat. Coming down from floaters, air drops, super steep sections, the Fish loves it all and is ready to resume control and grip the second those fins touch the water again.
In flatter, slower surf we could just ride the Fish flatter and dance about and get all the little flicks and snaps in that make small waves fun. The wider tail enables the board to pivot easily under foot, and if you want a very loose experience, you ride the board with a ‘Twinzer’ two fin set up.
Concluding the Fish
The fish shape can be a bit hit or miss if the design is too retro or the rails too chunky. But the Xelerator Fish is bang on the money for this type of board, and proves that the fish design, when done correctly, is the most versatile shape out there. It holds loads of power, it is super stable when gunning hard downwind and the sheer grip and turning circle make smacking lips and arcing into hard fast bottom turns a treat. You can ride it fast, slow, in mush, or hollow waves and it always seems to make your surfing better.
