I got the Bauhaus version (25kr) as mentioned by Feg which seems to work okay. I spoke to my girlfriend about it and our theory was that it depends on how much of a purist you want to be. Is it cheating, or learning bad habits or will it even slow down the learning process?
She has recently learnt how to water start and nails many of them first attempt but looses a lot of energy doing so. When you consider that she can’t jibe yet, that means time in the water after each run, dicking around manouvering the sail which is very tireing and in the end forces her to go ashore. If this thing buys her and extra hour on the water each session then we figure it’s worth it. In the end she will still be water starting and getting better at it every session, it just makes it that bit more user friendly.
What it came down to was that we (she) were willing to do anything to make the most of every hour we had here in Sweden’s short sailing season, on the water, in the straps and planing… cause that’s what’s the most fun.

(The other guys got in before me but I’ll post my thoughts anyway, same info basically)

I don’t know about that, I reckon it is looking like you are almost there. What I would do now is inspect the batten (latta) tension. The upper ones look like they could do with more tension (hard to tell in a picture though). This operation is a bit sensitive.
Get the batten key thingy and loosen the batten tension until you see that the clear monofilm (crossply) has small waves next to the batten pocket, if it is not already. Now tighten the batten until the waves in the monofilm next to the batten pocket just disappears. Do this by looking from the end of the batten along its length towards the mast, sometimes you have to move the sail about so you can catch some reflecting light. Don’t worry if the actual batten pocket has small waves in it, it is only the clear monofilm you are concerned about.
Your numbers for the luff measurements seem to add up right and is confirmed with the amount of rope you still have left: Luff of 448 on a 430 mast with extension of 21cm gives 451cm. It looks like you have about a 3cm gap left which should suggest you have downhauled the sail to 448. It looks like there is a little bit of floppyness in the leech in between the 3rd and fourth batten which I think is fine. Correct me someone if you think otherwise. Hard to tell with the crinkles in the upper part of the sail which may be due to the loose battens I mentioned earlier.
As far as boom measurement goes, it does look like the lower picture has too much tension. It looks quite flat and, as it will still work as an option if it gets really windy, the sail will feel a bit dead and will be difficult to get going. The first pic of 12.5cm boom extension is probably an okay place to start. I am not an expert on the Kult but it seems the battens may come a little too far forward of the mast (as seen on the lowest batten). You may want to set the boom on say 14.5 and see how it goes with only a couple of extra cm.
Your certainly at the stage where you can rig up the sail get on the water, and if there is another sailer around give him or her a hoi and see what they reckon. 🙂

TomasN wrote:Är det samma joint till alla märken? Min mastfot är en arrowsUnfortunately not. I have a pro-limit (copy) and a Neil pryde, they look the same but differ by about 1-2mm, and the hole where the screw goes though are also of different diameter. You’ll probably have to drop into a shop, or make a phone call to one, to compare. Have a ‘linjal’ near by.

JohanC wrote:Rig your 6.7+ around 1 pm and you´re set to go. Tomorrow looks more hazardous.. NW 15 knots may be too little for the east coast of Öland but if you´re a freestyler Haga could work too. We only have 5.5 and 6.0 respectively on 100L freestyle boards, although at most we weigh 65kg. What do you expect it to blow in M/S today? Maybe it isn’t worth coming for us. I thought it would be windier when I looked at the report yesterday.
Thanks for the help.

My girlfriend and I might come up to Haga wed-thurs in the search of wind. If the direction doesn’t suit Haga (DMI says N and SMHI says S to W so don’t really know what is happening there) where would the most of you go otherwise? I’m not after a description of all the spots on Öland, just the possibles for tomorrows conditions. Would be nice to be around other surfers. No waves though.
Also, where would you recommend for staying the night? Cheap but dry.
Thanks, Petter.

Okay, I’ll give it a go. (I may be repeating what Fnassel said)
Put the sail over the mast and attach the downhaul. It might help to put some tension on this already now. You’ll find out later what works for you.
Now, place the boom in front of the mast and sail running parallel to it with the small end of the boom in the area of the mast base/extension. The ‘bomfäste’ should be at the height you think you will need it, in the luff cut-out somewhere. You then take the rope that is attached to the ‘bomfäste’ (I forget what it is called) and wrap it around the mast twice and then back to the other side of the boom through a hole and through the cleat (small jaggedy tooth thing). If there are only small holes then there is another way to afix the rope but that’s a bit difficult to explain. If that’s what you have let me know.
The next step is to then move the skinny end of the boom up to the clew of the sail in a sizzor action and tie off the sails outhaul. This sizzor tightens the bomfäste. If the boom seems sloppy then unsizzor the boom and tighten up the wraps around the mast and sizzor again to the clew. Naturally, don’t over tighten it either but this you will notice as you won’t be able to sizzer the boom back to the clew (outhaul).
Hope this helps. If anything is unclear just fire more questions.
Petter.

Sent you a pm a while ago. But to summarise, I don’t reckon less than 2500kr. -

Don’t know, I bought it ‘kite only’ and use a ‘bastard’ of a bar set up; bits and pieces. North bar with a cleat (don’t know swedish name, adjusts rope length by jamming it) that I installed and use the Naish quick release loop that was sold a few years ago. They may still sell it for all i know. This was safe back then but don’t know if there is better stuff now. Thanks -

Just saw this. Almost made me put my fingers down my own throat too. 😀
Basically same as first post, right? (my swedish good, but not great). So, if there was any ‘dryg’ness earlier I missed it anyway.Whatever, whatever, seems like wind out there so I might actually get some time on water afterall. Cheers.

No worries.
What I was fishing for, and I should have been more clear, was if there are safer bar systems (that would suit my kites) than mine. I have been away from the sport for a few years and have no idea on advancements in this area.
Or are the advancements just a variation on the old theme, that do basically the same thing that mine does. The kites are staying, as my play money has all dried up.
Cheers.

I got a good deal on this one a while ago (albeit from 2005):
Way more expensive than the average harness but in the long run worth it for me. I am a bean pole (skinny as) but this doesn’t ride up on me. Could be that the rubber on the inside sticks well against my wetsuit. I have it tight but not unbearably tight. I don’t have any experience of other harnesses on the market so there may be others that work just as well.

Or order via https://sslsites.de/www.stoked-publications.com/index.php?rubrik=europe&lang=en where the shipping makes the deal cheaper.

Re: sjöbris. During the summer months Sydney does get a seabreeze which, depending on the season, can be adequate enough to get in a sail each week, so all is not lost. It’s just that it doesn’t get as ballistic as it does in, say, WA 🙂
And yeah, if you are keen, get a surfboard. I had a mate who went for a surf every morning before going to work, but he lived on the beach.
